Newspaper bill
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. A newspaper authority is envisaged in a private member’s bill which Dr A. M. Finlay (Lab., Henderson) has given notice of his intention to introduce into Parliament. The bill’s introduction describes it as “an act to ensure that in any proposal to transfer the ownership or control of a newspaper, due weight is given to the public interest and in particular to the opinions and interests of the readers of the newspaper.” The bill proposes an authority of three which will consider applications for substitution of the person or company publishing the newspaper in the same way as if it was an application for the transfer of a Warrant issued under the Broadcasting Authority Act.
