Seizing of drugs

. The Customs Department seized about 2/31b of illicit drugs at Lyttelton and at Christchurch airport last year. The drugs were found in 18 separate inspections, of which 15 were made on ships at Lyttelton.

The amount obtained was only a small fraction of what Customs inspectors seized during the prevous year. The discovery of more than 101 b of opium in raids on a ship at Lyttelton and the later discovery of a 50gm parcel in another person’s possession were the only detections in 1969.

The collector of Customs in Christchurch (Mr F. O. Spackman) said yesterday that inspectors maintained a strict vigilance at Lyttelton and at the airport for drugs. Most of the ships calling at Lyttelton had already been inspected in Auckland and Wellington and the amounts found at Lyttelton were very small.
