Big crowd at cat show

Between 4000 and 5000 people visited Canterbury Court on Saturday afternoon to see the cats and kittens in the ninth championship show of the Canterbury AU Breeds’ Cat Club.

The manager of the show (Mr N. Tregoning) estimated that there were at least five times as many people present than were at last year’s show. He believed this was because of the club’s much bigger advertising campaign this year. It was the biggest crowd since the national cat show in 1966.

Entries of 529 cats and kittens, were down on last year’s record figure of 568.

Among displays was a grooming demonstration, showing how to care for domestic cats, and a display of decorated cages. Two breeds new to New Zealand shows—Colourpoint and Tonkinese—were entered. Other

unusual breeds were Bluepoint, Chocolatepoint, Lilacpoint, Redpoint, Tortoiseshellpoint and Lynxpoint Siamese, Red Abyssinian, blue Burmese and Self Lilac Havana. The prize for best litter In the show was won by Mrs D. J. Davies’s Utter of Tonkinese cats, which were exhibited for the first time in the South Island. Comprising the mother and five kittens, the Utter was bred In Wellington by Mrs Davies. Tonkinese cats are obtained by mating a Siamese with a Burmese through several generations until a strain of pure Tonkinese is achieved.

Trophies were presented by the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) who is a patron of the dub. Judges for all sections were: Mrs B. A. Sedcole (registered longhair cats); Mrs C. L. Kerr (registered longhair neuters and spays); Mrs T. M. Hall (registered longhair kittens); Mrs A. F. Amory (registered shorthair cats, Siamese); Mrs B. A.
