THE NEVIS BLUFF ROAD, above the Kawarau River, is having major repairs. Floods last September caused a section of the road to fall away, and the road is being widened to embed it further into the hill. Solid rock has to be blasted 90ft above the surface of the road. The work, carried out by two contractors under the direction of the Ministry of Works, requires the closing of the main road between Queenstown and Cromwell between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday except for half an hour from noon. It is estimated that 70,000 cubic yards of rock will be shifted and that the work will cost $70,000. From the road to the river the drop is about 120ft.
