INDIANAPOLIS.
The New Zealand driver, D. Hulme, has tentatively qualified fourth fastest for the front row of the grid for the 1971 Indianapolis 500-mile race on May 29, Associated Press reported.
Hulme drove his mark 16 McLaren - Offenhauser at 174.910 m.p.h., to have the third such McLaren in the four-car front row.
The pole winner, P. Revspn (178.696 m.p.h.), the second fastest, M. Donohue, and Hulme all drove McLaren-de-signed cars. Revson’s speed of 178.696 m.p.h, was almost 8| m.p.h. faster than the 170.221 recorded by last year’s winner, J. Rutherford.
The increase in speed was attributed to the McLaren design utilising aerodynamic body shapes for better handling and car stability, and inspired by European Formula One grahd prix racers. The third fastest qualifier
was 1966 Indy winner, R. Unser, at 175.816 in a ColtFord. ,
