Concern about deliveries
While concerned about non-delivery of newspapers because of the dispute between rural mail contractors and the publishers of "The Press”, the executive of North Canterbury Federated Fanners is reluctant to become involved in negotiations for a settlement. The real dispute was between the contractors and a newspaper publisher, said Mr A F. Wright, the provincial senior vice-chairman. No delivery charge was made in major towns, so that it could be said that country subscribers were subsidising town subscribers. “We are having to pay for a diminishing service,” said Mr A. L. Mulholland (Darfield). “Once we used to get our paper delivered on the Saturday of Easter but we don’t any longer.” A remit from the Dunsandel branch asking that the provincial executive do everything within its power to prevent the imposition of a 130 per cent increase in the delivery charge was referred to the executive committee.
