Waltham subway

Sir,—The tunnel under the Waltham railway yards has not been swept for 19 days. It is a mess of broken glass, rotting food, and old paper. It is poorly lit and it smells. In the last two years I have ruined two tyres and had many punctures. By using the tunnel I save 20 minutes each day. I have spoken to many people who use it and they all agree that something should be done about it.— Yours, etc., TUNNELLER. May 4, 1971. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The Waltham subway is cleaned by the council approximately once a fortnight. There are cycle barriers at each end of the subway and notices advising that cycling within the subway is prohibited. The subway is closed at night, and the Railways Department is responsible for the lighting of the subway. .The smell is considered due to the dampness of the subway.”]
