Electronic ignition

The recently-announced Vl2 Jaguar E-type is the first volume production car to have an electronic con-tact-breakerless ignition system. The Lucas Opus system was developed on Formula I racing engines. A conventional ignition system can produce only 400 sparks a second, but in a high performance Vl2 engine the spark rate can rise to 600 sparks a second at 6000 r.p.m. Hence the use of the Opus system, which can deliver 700 sparks a second. Another attraction of the system is that with no contact breaker system there are no parts to wear, and there is no need for routine maintenance. Spark timing is automatically maintained at its original setting.
