Meeting of C.G.C.

One team from each island will speak in the final of a national Country Girls’ Club debating contest at the annual conference of the New Zealand federation, in Palmerston North from June 8 to 11. The subject will be: “That industrial strikes are justifiable.” The Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) will give the Sydney Freeman Memorial Lecture at the joint opening of the C.G.C. conference and Young Farmers’ Clubs conference, which will be held at the same time. About 150 C.G.C. members are expected to attend. The federation had assisted a group of young persons in Tonga last year, giving them sewing machines, materials, books, and kitchenware, according to the federation organising secretary (Mrs A J. Salt). In return, more than 70 articles had been received from Tonga; it was intended to sell these at the conference, to raise money for more assistance to Tonga.
