Two further “twilight shift” licences

Two more “twilight shift” goods-service licences were granted to applicants by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. M. Dwyer) on Wednesday. The licences were granted to Maurice Edward Collier, trading as the Woolston Coal and Cartage Depot, and to Macfarlane Freighters, Ltd, to permit them to employ drivers for up to 15 hours a day, if necessary, to work the “twilight” shift to service the Lyttelton wharves. A total of 15 similar licenes was granted last month.

The licences would be granted if the applicants accepted the conditions under which licences were granted last month, said Mr Dwyer. He said last month that he relied on firms not to have drivers working a 15-hour shift continually.

A representative of the companies which applied last month to the authority explained the reason for the applications during last month’s sitting. The situation bore some resemblance to the seasonal demands of rural areas, he said. One of the main differences was that supplementary hours at the waterfront were worked

erratically—no driver would be working extended hours regularly. Also, because of various delays, the actual driving hours would be much shorter than the extended hours sought.

The drivers’ award did not provide for shifts to match those of the watersiders. The Canterbury Drivers’ Union had demanded special additional payments and condiitions for this work, he said. ; Other goods - service (licences were granted to William Drake (from William Hugh Mackenzie), James Anthony Smith (from Barry Vincent Meikle), and Maitland Gerald Donaldson (from E. Russell and Company. Ltd).

A taxicab service licence was granted to Lawrence Newberry-Johnson (from William John Freeman) and an amendment to a rental service licence, by addition of six goods-service vehicles, was granted to Dominion Rental Cars, Ltd.
