New bridges and road

(Staff Reporter) GREYMOUTH, May 20. Plans for a new bridge across the Grey River at Stillwater, replacement of the Cobden bridge at Greymouth and upgrading of the road on the west side of the river to become the State highway, were outlined to the National Roads Board yesterday. The slm scheme was expected to be completed in about six years, said the director of reading for the Ministry of Works (Mr F. Langbein). The work would proceed on the two bridges and road work concurrently. The Ministry’s resident engineer at Greymouth (Mr H. A. Grigg) said that the shifting of the main road to the other side of the river would overcome improvement problems on the present highway, which now was tortuous and troubled with

slips. The new highway, of about seven miles, will run from Stillwater through Taylorville to join the coastal highway from Westport to Grey-

mouth, a shorter and much easier route that requires only minor re-alignment. One lane for Taramakau (Staff Reporter) GREYMOUTH, May 20. Surprise that the 900 ft Goosman bridge across the Taramakau River had been approved for one-lane traffic only was expressed by the chairman of the National Roads Board, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) when the board met the Grey County Council yesterday. The bridge, for which a $250,000 contract has just been let, will connect the West Coast highway below Jacksons with the scenic route via Lake Brunner to Grey.'iouth. The cost does not directly affect the board as a Consolidated Fund vote was obtained

by the county at a $6 to $1 subsidy. When the Minister questioned the one-lane traffic design the county engineer (Mr D. C. Forrest) said that the single lane had been fixed by direction of the National Roads Board. “We hate one-lane bridges,” said the Minister.
