Gas pockets found
CV.Z. Preu Auociation) NAPIER, May 19. Beaver Exploration (New Zealand), Ltd, which is drilling an exploratory oil well at Ashley Clinton, near Takapau in association with Longreach Oil, Ltd, has struck small pockets of gas. A geologist on the drilling site said the well was basically no different from the Onga Onga No. 1 well, which was abandoned after an area of basement rock was reached. However, he said, two or; three pockets of gas had been: struck at the Takapau well and they had probably been caused by porous shale. “The signs to date are more promising that Onga Onga,” .he said. The manager for drilling operations, Mr H. Lyon, considers that the investigations made so far are most encouraging. He said it was hoped to discover a fault block containing worthwhile quantities of hydrocarbons. The well, which is being sunk by Intairdril (Australia) Proprietary, Ltd, under a farm-out agreement from BP-Shell-Aquitaine and Todd Petroleum Development, Ltd, had reached a depth of 2000 feet today and drilling is likely to continue to 5000 feet
