ACROSS THE CENTRE OF NEW ZEALAND.—Nelson’s “Wood” area, with its acres of tomato land under glasshouses, lies Just to the north and below the geographical centre of New Zealand. The trig station at the top of Botanical Hill was replaced a few years ago by a modern marker and plaque, built and presented to the city by Nelson Jaycees (bottom left foreground). The Maitai River winds through the city area, emptying into the harbour. Port Nelson, with its 120 acres of land reclaimed from the sea, is prominent in the background. Within the last eight years every industrial site on the reclamation has been built on or taken for building.
