POPPY SALES
Children 4 in order’
It was perfectly in order for school children to sell Anzac poppies on a house-to-house basis, said the secretary of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association (Mr F. Barron). Mr Barron said that for 20 years ’to his knowledge schools had undertaken to sell the poppies on behalf of the R.S.A. There was a standard charge of 10c a poppy.
He was commenting on a letter to the Editor of “The Press” by a correspondent who implied that a 10-year-old boy who was offering a poppy for sale to him might one day develop into a “con. man.” Mr Barron said the R.S.A. was extremely grateful to the schools which did much through these sales to raise funds for the association’s benevolent fund. A caller at “The Press,” a returned serviceman, said he objected to the reference of the future con. man. His own son, who also was 10, had brought some poppies home from school for sale in the neighbourflood.
