MANAGER OF ROWING TEAM
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON.
Mr D. Rowlands (Auckland) has been appointed the manager of the New Zealand rowing team for the European championships in Copenhagen in August.
This was announced in a statement in Wellington yesterday by the chairman of the New Zealand rowing council (Mr L. E. Brooker).
Rowlands won a rowing silver medal at the Empire Games in Auckland, a gold medal four years later at Vancouver, and was an emergency in the 1956 Olympic team. He managed the rowing team at the Perth Empire Games. He is one of the three na-
tional selectors, and the vicepresident of the national association.
FUNDS DRIVE The newly-appointed manager is leading a drive te raise between $30,000 and $40,000 to finance the European tour. At its meeting in Wellington, the council agreed it might well have to revise the original $32,000 estimate for the tour. The figure might be closer to $37,000. Although the association had sought assistance from the Danish Rowing Federation, in the form of travel or accommodation grants, it had been advised that Danish rowing was not in a position financially to subsidise visiting crews. NEW SHELLS The council also information from Italy confirming an order placed with the Doniratico company for a new eight and four for use during the tour. The 16-man national squad will assemble in Christchurch this week-end for 10 weeks of intensive training under the New Zealand coach (Mr R. Robertson). The team leaves on July 4 to compete in major regattas in Germany and Switzerland, leading up to the five-day European championships at Copenhagen beginning on August 19.
New Zealand will have a coxed four and an eight at the championships.
