COACHING SCHEME
Rugby union doubtful
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND. Mr R. Don, chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union, yesterday gave a qualified welcome to the suggestion made by Canterbury that a national coaching system be started.
“Any move to improve coaching methods and raise the standard of our game would be supported by the Auckland Union," he said. “However, Auckland has never discussed coaching at a national level, as suggested by Canterbury. Our own coaching seminars held over recent years have been very successful.
“I would like to hear the arguments for and against, because my first thoughts are that this may not be as successful as the promoter would wish it to be. After all, there is a limit to the time that club coaches can put into the game. “If we become too stereotyped in our coaching methods, we should be playing the game by numbers. .1 would not like to see the individuality of coaches or players curbed in any way.”
