Spirited goodbye
Chinese crackers exploded noisily when the 2928ton, Chinese-manned tanker Dayu (formerly Maurea) left Lyttelton for Marsden Point and Singapore early yesterday morning. ,
Chinese seamen on the Liberian-registered ship’s focs’le head let off crackers and not to be outdone, the ship’s agent on the wharfside also ignited a few. For this, he was thanked on the loud hailer by the master (Captain H. H. W. Chan). According to legend, the flreworks ward off evil spirits and bring good luck on the voyage. The Dayu was recently purchased from' Shell Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, by Ocean Bitumen Carriers, Ltd. A Chinese crew recently flew out to man the vessel at Lyttelton. The Dayu—or Maurea as she was then—had been laid up at Lyttelton since last July.
