Progress on census
The census enumerator (Mr R. L. Butcher) is confident that the general analysis of personal and dwelling schedules taken from houses in Christchurch city will be completed before the end of the first week in May. He said yesterday that extra staff recruited from the Post Office would be engaged to supplement the work now being done by a team of 15 women who had done the bulk of the sorting work. The general analysis will reveal the population of the city and the number of houses in it. AU schedules are being sent to the Government Statistician at the rate of 10 or 12 parcels a day. The analysis of the census schedule taken in counties surrounding Christchurch is being done at the Papanui and Riccarton Post Offices by permanent staff working on an overtime basis.
