MARKET SHOWS SMALL GAIN IN MIXED TRADING

Trading was mixed on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday. The leaders were almost in balance with rises and falls about equal in number. The speculative oils weakened after a firm showing earlier in the week, and Australian stocks reversed their upward trend.

Although rises were outnumbered by falls 21 to 27 the index was marginally higher at 280.96, a rise of '0.36. Alex Harvey, Alcan, B.N.Z. Finance, Fletcher Holdings, South British Insurance were among the leaders to improve on their recent low prices. N.Z. Refining (ex dividend) showed a rise of 15c to 390 c and Kaiapoi gained 2c to 35c after a reported jump in sales.

Air Work jumped 20c to 110 c in Christchurch after being untraded for some time.

Feltex continued to move down with a fall of 5c to 345 c, while Consolidated Brick at 320 c and Trans Holdings at 140 c lost the same amount. Tasman came back 8c to

305 c after the company pre-| dieted a lower profit this year, and Forests eased 2c to 360 c. L. and M. Oil lost 3c to 32c, N.Z. Petroleum 15c to 130 c and Republic 1c to 32c in a weaker speculative market.
