No abolition of training

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 12. A firm assurance that National Service would not be abolished was given in Parliament today by the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson).

Speaking during the Adress-in-Reply debate, he said the defence vote was being examined to ensure that the most efficient use would be made of resources.

There would inevitably be an increase in defence spending, but there must be restraint, he said. “But I want to make it clear that there will be no abolition of National Service.” The Minister said this was the most effective way in manhours and expenditure of money to form the basic Army formation which been essential to New Zealand’s development over the years.
