Pool use defended

Recent criticism that the Wharenui pool was not being made freely available for the winter training of swimmers from other clubs was unwarranted, the president of the Wharenui club (Mr D. W. Cain) said this week. “Some of the bigger clubs in Christchurch did not bother to use the pool at all last season although they

were offered it,” said Mr Cain. “Other clubs used it for short periods during the winter. There were several occasions when only part of the pool was used by outside clubs and another 20 swimmers could have been accommodated.”

A number of competitive swimmers live on the west side of the city and could use the pool after school, between 3.30 and 5 p.m., but this time, and others which were available, were not being taken. “An extension will be made on the times available to other clubs for this winter season; times which we considered liberal last winter,” Mr Cain said. His club had raised the money to pay for the pool and its swimmers obviously had priority. Mr Cain said that the final payment on the pool would be made this week.
