Glentunnel Domain
Sir, —Last year I complained through your column about access to the river at the Glentunnel Domain. Like “Unhappy Picnicker” 1 too was disgusted to find the way to the river blocked by a dis-
gusting heap of coal dross. I consider the dumping of this rubbish on public property an act of vandalism. If an accident occurs at the river the way is made impassable by a wired-up gate as well. All the Glentunnel Domain Board will say is that they do not want cars through the gate. Why not? If motor vehicles can drive up opposite the Children’s Playground in Hagley Park it surely cannot be suggested that it is unsafe to drive to the river at the Glentunnel Domain. Is the Domain Board trying to conceal the fact that they have leased this entire area to the Hororata Golf Club? It is time the terms of lease were made public.—Yours, etc., (MRS) B. E. LOGAN. “Waverley," Hororata R.D., February 24,1971. Sir,—As one whose family also enjoys using the popular swimming hole at the Glentunnel Domain, may I suggest to “Unhappy Picnicker** that if she became exhausted crossing that not-so-rough 200 yards from the perfect shady picnic spots in the domain proper, then she is sadly out of form. May I also suggest that a letter to the secretary of the Glentunnel Domain Board with a donation to supplement those left in the conveniently placed box on the ground by a few grateful patrons would do much more to help the local men who give valuable machine and man-hours every year toward the improvement and maintenance of the domain, that the ill-conceived public criticism she has seen fit to offer.—Yours, etc., LOCALITE.
