Diversifying exports

Sir, “Freedom” asks which industry could take the place of farm exports. The point is, of course, that we want to increase farm exports and other exports. That is what all authorities recommend by the word "diversification.” New Zealand’s manufactured exports rose by 91 per cent in value between 1967-68 and 1969-70 to $123 million. A good example of what can be achieved is Ireland. There a “Sutch-like” industrial expansion was started in 1960. For 1970, industrial exports from Ireland were $4OB million compared to $7l million 10 years ago. Manufactures there amount to 40 per cent of total exports now compared to 21 per cent in 1960.—Yours, etc.,
