Education cuts
Sir,—Possible cuts in education expenditure were reported in “The Press” of Febniary 22. All strike at activities essential to offset the mounting pressures in our society, activities which, to the pragmatic, also could be regarded as essential to the acnievment of N.D.C. targets The cuts will shatter many hopes and halt some urgent new development at a critical time. Taking one ex-ample-ancillary teachers—restrictions would be a blow at today’s increasing recognition that school has to be much more than a place for vocational training. Pressures on and in the home have led to social education-liberal
studies programmes and counselling, for example, and these are not extras but meet an urgent need. They were discussed in a report,
entitled “Education for Life,” recently submitted to the Minister of Education by the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch. The Minister was urged to give recognition to what had been done, and encourage further developments. The mental and spiritual health of the nation is at least as important as its material advance. Yours, etc., G. C. SUGGATE. February 24, 1971.
