South African Consulate

Sir,—The New Zealand Race Relations Council wants the Government to close the South African Consulate because of the activities of the Consul - General. For sheer effrontery this takes a lot to beat. For some years organisations and individuals have spread false and misleading information on South Africa with the aim of poisoning the minds of New Zealanders against that country. When the Consul-General takes action, after much provocation, to provide the New Zealand public with the true facts, outfits like the Relations Council raise an outcry. The fact that this council does nothing to try to remedy the horrors going on in Zambia and Zanzibar shows who are in fact the real racialists. Mr P. H. Philip is doing a fine, job to counter the racial discrimination of C.A.R.E. and similar organisations.—Yours, etc., THE WALRUS. February 21, 1971.
