Minister to consider coal price increase

(From Our Own Reporter? GREYMOUTH, Feb. 23.

■ In Reefton this afternoon, the Minister of Mines (Mr Shelton) promised a deputation from the Inangahua District Coal Mine Owners’ association that he would look into the possibility of increasing the cost of coal. A steep rise in the cost of coal production had been recorded, the secretary of the association (Mr J. H. Milligan) told the Minister. He asked that the State increase the price of its coal, which, he said, would also allow the private coalmine

owners to increase their prices.

He said that the association had tried to raise its price but had been told by coal merchants that they would go elsewhere. The solution to this was for the State to increase its price as well.

Another member of the delegation, Mr K. Douglas, told Mr Shelton that the recent rise in freight .costs was of no benefit to the association.

“This is taken by the merchants,” he said. “Insofar as we may be unfairly competing, we will look at our prices,” said Mr Shelton.
