Smokey Cord picked to win tonight

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Smokey Cord, an impressive winner of the President’s Handicap on the first night, should not be troubled by the rise in class and may win the first leg, the Central Districts Handicap, at the Manawatu Raceway this evening. Smokey Cord won the President’s Handicap well after starting from the back mark of 24 yards. Before that, he had raced constantly at Hutt Park. The first-night winner, Corsair, and the beaten favourite, Easton Light, might be Smokey Cord’s strongest rivals. In the second leg, the Boyd Handicap, it is hard to imagine any contestant beating Mathias on his first-night run. That was Mathias’s second win on end, in which he fought on gamely under pressure over the final stages.
