'No personal attacks'
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 23. The secretary for the Citizens Association for Racial Equality (Mr O. T. Newnham) said today that there had been no personal attacks on the South African ConsulGeneral (Mr P. H. Philip). Mr Philip had said that the Race Relations Council was “resorting to grubby tactics of personal abuse” when delegates to the council said he was “politically and morally disseminating abhorrent propaganda” about apartheid in his speeches.
Mr Newnham said that in speaking of personal abuse, Mr Philip was trying to shift the issue.
“The question is not whether he responds only to invitations to speak, but whether in doing so to the extent and in the way he does, he exceeds his consular functions,” he said.
“He spreads a philosophy directly contrary to New Zealand’s way of life. This is not his proper role.”
