Barge use in U.S.
Very interesting developments in sea transport by barges in the United States merited more consideration in New Zealand, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) said in Christchurch on his return from a four-week visit to the United States. The use of barges as “floating containers” which could be loaded complete in ships held good prospects for New Zealand’s intermediate ports, Mr Kirk said.
The barges could be used in shallow-draught harbours and gave all the economies of bulk handling. They could be used over long distances: some were being used between Hawaii and the mainland United States.
One of the big problems with the use of containers in New Zealand was the question of what would happen to the intermediate ports—the use of barges might provide an answer.
