No decision on fruit

CN.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 23.

The Transport Advisory Council today decided to defer any decision on whether there should be a further relaxation of rail restrictions on the road transport of fresh fruit and vegetables. The national implications for the total rail system including, in particular, the Central Otago branch line, were such that the matter deserved much closer scrutiny, the council said. After consultations with fruit and vegetable growers a detailed report will be made to the next meeting of the council. The council will also consider further some aspects of a report on the road cartage of international containers.
