VEHICLE SAFETY

New Zealand standards

Statistics showed that the number of accidents arising from tae condition of vehicles was relatively small, said the regional secretary of the Ministry of Transport (Mr D. L. Hogan), in a letter received by the Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening. Commenting on a council suggestion that overseas safety standards should be adopted for new cars in New Zealand, Mr Hogan said that many measures had been introduced over the years to improve standards.

Almost all the cars put on the road in New Zealand were imported, and measures adopted overseas were incorporated as new vehicles were put into service. As to what safety measures should be incorporated in existing cars, the regulations were reviewed from time to time-

“You can be assured that the ministry is conscious of the desirability of taking all practical steps to reduce accidents from mechanical causes, as well as to reduce the severity of injuries received in all types of vehicle accidents," said Mr Hogan.
