REBUKE FOR EMPLOYEE
Discussion of death
An employee of the North Canterbury Hospital Board at Burwood Hospital who discussed the nature and circumstances of a patient’s death over an open radio wave band has been “severely reprimanded” by the Medical Superintendent (Dr. J. H. Maclntyre). On Tuesday evening, shortly after 9 p.m., the employee talked openly on the citizens’ wave band to a friend about the death of the patient, giving such details as age, appearance, name and cause of death.
The call was received by other listeners in the Christchurch area, and complaints were made to “The Press.”
Yesterday Dr Maclntyre said that the person concerned had broadcast the discussion at his home, and out of working hours.
“However the action cannot be condoned in any circumstances,” he said. “The employee has been severely reprimanded and warned that he must never do it again.” The death notice did not appear in “The Press” until the next morning.
