Gaines swimming pool

Sir, —Having just read that the City Council has provisionally dropped its scheme to build a pool in the Ham area, I wonder if a member of the council could give reasons why the finance put aside for this purpose could not be, as suggested in a previous correspondent’s letter, used to build the Games pool in the one large area lacking this amenity—the north-east (i.e., the Shirley) area.—Yours, etc., PAUL R. McWILLIAM. February 7, 1971. [Cr H. P. Smith, chairman of the City Council’s finance committee, replies: “The council has not ‘provisionally dropped its scheme to build in the Ham area.’ Discussions are still proceeding. There is no ‘finance put aside’ for a pool. A loan will have to be raised. If the Ham site is not proceeded with, all other suitable sites will be fully considered.”]
