M. O’Neill.—"Correspondents” I have no special claim on i space in our news columns. * Duly accredited spokesmen for representative organisa- I tions are allowed space, with- ( in reason, to express the . official views of those organisations. < 1 1 Oil in the harbour < Sir, —The Health Depart- j meat advises that because of pollution in the Lyttelton Har- 1 bour it is now unsafe to swim there. As seldom a day passes without ships in port allowing large amounts of oil to
escape and the Harbour Board having to dispose of this with detergents, the people of Lyttelton should expect the oil companies and the shipping companies to bear the bulk of the cost of building the proposed new swimming pool in Oxford Street, After all, it is not the children’s fault that they have been deprived of their natural swimming resort. Perhaps the oil companies and the shipping companies could state how much they have given to support the $33,000 swimming pool.— Yours, etc.,
. G. C. ADAMS. Lyttelton, February 12, 1971.
