H.S.O.8. harvest on weak attack

East Christchurch-Shirley’s attack was severely weakened by the absences of V. Pollard (serving the South Island), G. D. V. Pulley (honeymooning), and A. C. Nottingham (transferred), and It had to do without P. G. Coman as well.

The Old Boys’ batsmen appreciated their good fortune in the most practical manner by steadfastly going after as many batting points as they could wring out of East-Shirley. Thanks to batting which was a model of efficiency rather than an example of fiamboyancy. nine points were earned as Old Boys went to the brink of 300 in only 50 overs.

V. A. Bishop and M. J. Mowat made an accompllsed start against an erratic opening speU

from P. V. Gallagher and a more consistent effort by W. C. McQueen. Bishop should have been caught at three—twice—but he showed his gratitude by scoring a century which included 16 fours.

Mowat, who batted just 80 minutes for his 51, was full of intent towards the loose ball, and the 10 fours he struck were mostly clean, well-timed blows. B. G. Hadlee carried on the good work and right to the end. A. Hounsell spent only 13 minutes in putting together a not out 30 which included two sixes.

Fielding in blazing heat, East* Shirley aid not wilt under the pressure of the batting onslaught and came back very well after lunch with McQueen, who de* served much better, and Gal* lagher, bowling a good line. A. L. Andrew, using himself more so than at any time this season, reaped the rewards of the batsmen’s aggressive intent, though he and Gallagher each suffered from Hounsell in their final overs.

East-Shirley lost J. W. Grocott veiy early, but batted confidently and aggressivly in the 100 min* utes or so to stumps. P. R. Joyce played some scorching shots in his 48; T. R. Marshall made the most of the good fortune which went his way; and at the end, G. Tait and a newcomer. R. I, Lee, picked up runs readily. ’i m P ire ® : Messrs B. Dennison and W. R. Hobbs.
