New senior tennis competitions
Christchurch senior tennis players had some hard and close matches at Wilding Park on Saturday in the supplementary competitions after the championships were completed this season before Christmas.
In teams of three, each player had a singles and two doubles in an eight-up professional set and this was plenty for them in Saturday’s heat.
Only two of the scheduled three contests were played in the senior men’s grade because Woolston beat Edgeware by default and thus gained the maximum points. In the two fixtures played, Linwood Avenue beat Elmwood by 5 matches to 1 and United Beat Fendalton by 6 matches to 0. In the senior women’s competition Beckenham beat United by 5 matches to 1 and Elmwood beat North Linwood by a similar score. The points are:— Senior men: United 12, Woolston 14, Linwood Avenue 11, Elmwood 1, Fendalton 0, Edgeware 0. Senior women: Beckenham 11, Elmwood 11, North Linwood 1, United 1, Edgeware 0. Edgeware had the bye on Saturday. L Stanton, top for Linwood Avenue, and W. The young Fendalton player, M. Morrison, gave R. McCutcheon (United) remarkably strong opposition and McCutcheon could only win, 10-9. In the women’s grade, United’s loss to Beckenham was surprising because United won the championship earlier. However. the Beckenham side was given a fine start when Miss S. Moore beat the formidable Miss J. Bishop 8-6. The province’s top woman, Miss R. Legge, showed that she
has recovered from the leg injury which kept her out of the Canterbury and national championships when she beat Miss C. Ralfe (North Linwood), 8-1.
MEN Woolston beat Edgeware by default.
