C. Hill outstanding in N.Z. cash cycling

TIMARU.

Eighteen-year-old C. Hill, of Mid-Canterbury, showed outstanding form at the New Zealand cash cycling championships at Timaru on Saturday. He took three New Zealand junior championships in the five miles, the one mile, and the 500 metres sprint.

In the sprint final he won the first two races of the three races and the title in an average time of 14.1 seconds. C. Yaxley, of Canterbury, retained his title for the senior 4000 metres individual pursuit, for the third year in succession. He lapped all his opponents to get to the finals but the veteran, G. Moore, of Otago, put up a good fight before Yaxley lapped him to take the title. MILE TITLE

f Moore, a veteran of both ’ road and track, gained the t mile senior championship, ' beating D. Sorrenson, of ' South Canterbury into sect ond place with a time of 2min ’ A young Timaru rider, J. ■ Wadsworth, took the cham- ' pionship for the cadet 500 metres sprint, but was (beaten into second place in the mile championship by M. ! Ward, of Cante,bury. Ward ■ turned on a scorching pace in ■ the last lap of the mile and raced away from the bunch on the final straight to take • first. SENIOR 500 METRES One of the most exciting races of the day was the series between E. Gluestein, Mid|Canterbury, and A. Connell, of Auckland for the senior

500 metres sprint championship. With a race each, and a dead heat in the third race, making a fourth race necessary, the tension mounted, until Gluestein, riding very tactfully boxed Connell on the top of the track and then made his break. He could not be caught and was awarded the championship. Results were:—
