Chch teams on top in K.O. cricket
All but one of the minor association teams disappeared from the A-.N.Z. Bank knock-out cricket competition when the quarter-finals were played yesterday.
Three Christchurch senior sides—WestUniversity, Sydenham and Riccarton—advanced to the semi-finals, where they will be joined by either North Canterbury or High School Old Boys.
The match between these two sides was postponed, because of North Canterbury’s week-end representative match against West Coast at Rangiora. West-University, with the New Zealand captain, G. T. Dowling, in good form, beat South Canterbury comfortably at Timaru, while Riccarton easily disposed of Buller. At Ashburton, Sydenham’s batting depth proved too much of a hurdle for the home team. West-University 206/7 (R. Allen 2», G. T. Dowling 70, M. Fisher 66, B. F. Hastings 21; C. Galwey 2/40, G. Ritchie 2/21, C. Aitken 2/47) beat South Canterbury 101 (W. Taylor 36, C. Aitken 31; ,C. M. Kirk 3/26, P. A. Sharp 2/23).
Sydenham 207/9 (B. J. Salt 36, D. L. Gallop 34, K. D. Prusas 31, I. Wilson 28 not out; B. C. Sampson 3/38, R. Isherwood 2/44) beat Ashburton 157 (P. E. Wallace 33, D. Hamilton 29, B. V. Sampson 26 not out; W. M. Duncan 3/23, Salt 2/38). Riccarton 251 (G. T. Barrett 78, G. R. McAuley 61, B. P. Isherwood 53; J. Parker 3/47, B. Aldridge 3/30, G. Hart 2/37) beat Buller 64 (P. W. Hammant 3/16, P. G. D’Auvergne 3/9, McAuley 2/0).
West University had the upper hand throughout its game at Timaru, Dowling and Fisher scoring freely against the struggling South Canterbury bowlers. The home side failed to reach half its opponent’s total, Kirk and Sharp, the spin bowlers, having matters much their own way. The highlight of Sydenham’s display at Ashburton was a partnership of 54 in five completed overs by Salt and Wilson; Sydenham scored 71 in the last 10 overs. Ashburton made a promising start, but four batsmen were run out in attempting quick singles and the game gradually slipped away from the home side. Barrett, McAuley and Isherwood were chiefly responsible for Riccarton’s score of 251, scored in 39.5 overs.' Buller did not look comfortable at any stage, and was dismissed for a meagre 64. McAuley, normally a wicketkeeper, finished off the Bui-
ler innings by taking two wickets in three balls. PLATE MATCHES In the Plate matches, G. J. Walklin (St Albans) took a hat-trick against Hagley Old Boys, while A. E. Collins (Lancaster Park) scored a century against Old Collegians. His innings lasted only 90 minutes, and included eight sixes and nine fours.
East-Shirley 234/8 (K. R. Hawker 73 not out, N. M. Pitches 48, R. I. Lee 42; R. Wilson 2/33. J. Adams 2/24) beat Christchurch Suburban 144 (A. Westwood 48, W. Black 28; P. G. Coman 3/25, Pitches 2/24). St Albans 112/2 (B. D. Lark 41, L. A. Smith 37, G. B. Smith 24 not out) beat Hagley Old Boys 111 (R. Cusdin 69; G. J. WalkUn 5/12, P. M. Fazackarley 2/32). Lancaster Park 254/6 (A. E. Collins 100, A. M. McKendry 80 not out; R. W. Fulton 2/32) beat Old Collegegians 157 (D. McDonald 65; W. R. Wilson 3/33, B. C. Irving 3/35, R. J. Hadlee 2/4).
Supporters* Club 213/8 (Jenkins 95, S. C. Guillen 48; M. C. Stonyer 4/33, Amos 2/6) beat Marist 170/9 (Walsh 62 not out, W. Ryall 43, M. Sullivan 41; M. Burtt 4/22).
