Riccarton wins fine match against East

Beginning the day 135 ahead and with eight wickets standing. East Christchurch-Shirley, reasonably., had great expectations, but they were denied first by some very tight and deter-I mined bowling from R. C. Motz and J. W. Kiddey, and then by lome fielding lapses which added bonuses to Riccarton's investments in batting attack. Motz and Kiddey were a formidable pair, and they performed a vital service for their side by keeping the scoring down to about 30 in the first hour—this although P. G. Coman, G. Tait and then V. Pollard were all eager to hammer home their side’s advantage. Kiddey bowled splendidly, but had to retire with a leg injury, leaving Motz an extra burden. He shouldered it wonderfully well, bowling throughout the morning of two hours and a quarter. But Motz alone could not contain the batsmen for ever, and after that hard-fought hour. Coman and Pollard prospered. Coman played some daring strokes, and if they were a mixture of good and bad, there were some square cuts of athletic violence which a West Indian would have been proud to own. Pollard attacked whenever he could and P. R. Joyce, hooking vigorously, helped him score 62 in 48 minutes. The task of scoring 277 in 240 minutes looked beyond a rather unreliable Riccarton team, and the target seemed very distant when three wickets fell for 24. But B. P. Isherwood, who has been batting well all through the season joined P. A. Stubbings in a lively and attractive partnership which brought in 96 runs in 71 minutes. Both had lives—lsherwood was

dropped before he scored—but they were firm of stroke and purpose. Isherwood is a strong hitter, in the mood, and although Stubbings had a few unhappy moments, he again reminded a growing crowd that when the runs are coming, he looks an especially attractive player. D. A. Dempsey, hardly out of school, hit a splendid six and with good shots helped Stubbings add 58 for the fifth wicket in 48 minutes; it was, rather. Stubbings helping Dempsey, for the newcomer took charge. Stubbings and Motz scored 57 together in 29 busy minutes, then Motz and R. J. Miller all but finished the job in dual harness, with their 29 in 17 minutes.

Motz has had a thin time with the bat this season, but this time it was the old Motz, hitting tremendously powerful blows, putting the ball over the boundary twice off Pollard and twice off the lively mediumpacer. W. C. McQueen. East had a faint chance when the seventh wicket fell and 13 were still needed but Miller and K. leremia, not without their anxious moments, saw their side home, the last runs coming f r om overthrows as a warranted shv at the stumps went bv.
