Frozen fish and chicken sale
A Fendalton fishmonger, Mr B. E. Mather, will sell frozen fish and chickens on a Saturday—today. Mr Mather has been advertising since Tuesday last his intention of offering five tons of fish and poultry for sale this morning. About midafternoon yesterday, he was visited by a Department of Labour inspector, and was told he could not sell either frozen fish or frozen poultry on a Saturday. “If you can sell it fresh, under any conditions at all, I don’t see why you can’t sell it frozen,” Mr Mather said last evening. “As I told the inspector, I have to keep
faith with my customers. I am going through with this, regardless.”
With blue cod, gropei; and sole going at wholesale prices, and chickens at 3c per lb less than wholesale, Mr Mather expects to do good business. But one of his customers is likely to be a departmental inspector securing evidence for a prosecution. The superintendent of the Department of Labour in Christchurch (Mr A. J. Peterson) confirmed last evening that Mr Mather would commit an offence if he went ahead. “That's the law of the land, and we’re not empowered to make any exceptions,” Mr Peterson said.
