Shalimar, Light Globe win

(From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN. A surprise favourite, Shalimar and an out-of*form Light Globe combined In the oncourse double at Forbury Park last evening to return to , ISOM for $l. Shalimar, after having 10 horses in front of her in the early stages, did not look like justifying favouritism in the Welcome Pace until she sprinted up near the three furlongs. Her run carried her past the pacemaker, Quick Heel, and she quickly opened up a winning break. She was tiring badly towards the end but lasted to beat Colonel Adios by two and a half lengths. Petermite battled on for third, a similar distance away, clear of Johnny’s Brother, which had every chance. Whipochet had his chance but fifth was the best he could manage. There was general surprise when a false start was not declared in the Roslyn Pace. Hot Feet broke a furlong from the start!ng point and dropped at least 60 yards behind the field. He made up a little ground but was still some lengths from the field when a start was declared.

Martin Twinkle set the pace from Robinson Crusoe and Heatherloch, both of which became awkwardly placed when Light Globe moved up to second near the five furlongs. Light Globe took the lead on the home turn and was not tested to win by two lengths from John Charles which was one of the tail-enders in the early stages. Hot Feet put in an amazing run to finish third, half a length away, a nose in front of Cingalese, with Fortunate making ground for fifth, ahead of Lady Choice and the favourite, Heatherloch, which was never in the clear.

Great Elect, which paid $1.60 for a win and 85c for a place, had no trouble winning the Star Handicap from Jack Walker, with Douschka a fair third, well dear; of Big Spender, which broke j after six furlongs and showed! speed to be one of the leaders! in the middle stages. I

GOOD WIN Dreamy Morn gave further evidence of his class when overcame the disadvantage of starting from 36 yards to win the February Stakes, a race which provided one of the most thrilling contests seen at the meeting. Robert Mac made a brilliant beginning from 24 yards and wended his way through tardy beginners to be fourth little more than a furlong from the stert. Proud Polka made the pace, with Robert Meo moving round to join him when the field packed up in the middle stages. Bachelor Blue and Dreamy Morn were still a fair way back, trying to work into reasonable positions. Bachelor Blue set out round the field and joined Robert Mac In front with less than three furlongs to run. Dreamy Morn moved in behind them, the trio drawing away from the others. Bachelor Blue had the measure of Robert Mac with a furlong to run and looked likely to win. However, Dreamy Morn, wide out on the track, responded in great style for G. D. Shand and his superior stamina gave him a wilt by almost two lengths. Bachelor Blue beat the lessexperienced Robert Mac by a long neck for second and then there was a break of 13 lengths to Doctor Ted which was very slow away.

FAST RUN Logan Park. which was checked in his race on Saturday, was untroubled to win the Otago Handicap, recording a time faster than that of Van Rover in the Southern Cross Handicap. Logan Park was fortunate to escape trouble in the early stages of the race and he was reasonably placed most of the way. He moved up to Paroa early In the run home and appeared to win with something in hand from Le Char. Philemon made a late bld for third, after breaking early, with Paroa tiring to fourth. He was followed by Honest John and I Direct Jan, which showed speed Rafter breaking. ' The surprise second favourite, (Jason McCord, finished last after 'breaking early.
