ADDINGTON MARKET Adult ewes firm, but two-tooths easier

Adult breeding ewes continued to sell steadily at the Addington market yesterday, but vendors of two-tooth ewes were disappointed, most of the yarding showing a marked drop on last week’s rates.

Although quality in the two-tooth section was quite good, the much larger yarding was well in excess of demand, and only a few sales were made at more than $7.50. The store sheep yarding was 24,485, compared with 20,210 last week. It consisted of 4710 wether lambs, 1695 ewe lambs, 5440 twotooth ewes and 12,640 adult ewes. Store lambs Wether lambs were forward hl smaller numbers this week, but the ewe lamb entry was much the same as in recent weeks. Corriedales and halfbreds made up most of the entry, and quality was average. Values showed little change on recent rates. As usual the top pens of wether lambs continued to fetch more than $5, with most of the others of average quality at *4.30 to *4.60. Once again, very few lambs fetched less than *4. Although pastoral conditions are becoming dry, the buying gallery eouid have absorbed a lot more lambs.

Ewe lambs had a better sale, mainly because of some interest from freezing buyers. The best of the Corriedale ewe lambs sold from *5.40 to *6.20, with others

at wether lamb price or 20c to 30c better. Two pent of Perendale ewe lambs sold from *5.85 to *5.90. Sales of store lambs Included:— Ewe lambs: K. H. Parkinson and Son (Kaltuna), 162 Perendales at *3.85 to *5.90; S. E. Flatten (Kaltuna), 150 Romneys at *4.50 to *485; B. J. Smith (Oxford!, 75 Corriedales at *5.35; R. W. Two-tooth ewes The two-tooth ewe offering, which occupied four races, was the largest of the season, and clearly well in excess of demand. The market at no stage approached last week’s good levels.

Selling opened on a weak note, and it was not until the final stages that it showed some lift Values for 'much of the sale

were 50c to 60c back on last week’s rates. For vendors, it was a most disappointing sale, particularly as the yarding included a good selection of tidy, fairly even-woolled pens of Corriedales and halfbreds. Good average fine-woolled ewes sold steadily at (7 to *7.40, with only a small selection at more than *760. Only three pens of Corriedales fetched more than *B. Plainer young ewes had a harder sale, and prices were very modest, with some selling at *6 or a little more. The market came to life on two occasions with the offering Of some Perendales. These met an animated inquiry, finally changing hands at *9.90 to *lO6O. Considering the level of lamb and wool prices it was big money. Two-tooth ewes: P. S. Northcote (Waiau). 208 halfbreds at *7.10 to *8; D. Anderson (Walau), 120. Corriedales at *7.30 to *7.70; R. A. Black (Culverden), 171 Corriedales at *7.50 to *8; A. L. Adult sheep Adult sheen again had a very sound sale. A large.gallery followed the sale, and there was a ready inquiry for all ewe* with a useful breeding life left While the yarding included the usual proportion of plain ewe* of very limited breeding value, it also included several annual draft* of quit* good standard. Good-framed ewe*, with two season’s use ahead of them, sold readily at *8 to *6.50. and there were again odd sales at more than *7. A feature line of annual draft Corriedale* from North Canterbury topped the fine-woolled section at *7.80. A line of five-year-old Perendales met brisk competition, and duly realised the best price of the day for adult ewes—*B.so. Average one-year ewes sold in the *8 to *5.60 range, with others from *4.30 to *4BO. Only odd pens were taken by freezing buyer* most of the older ewes being above freezing values.
