Student housing need ‘desperate’
With only three weeks left before the start of the first university term for 1971, student accommodation needs at the University of Canterbury were described yesterday as “desperate.”
The University of Canterbury accommodation officer (Miss A. Borrie), said that it seemed that Christchurch had reached “saturation point” as far as private board for students was concerned. “Things are pretty grim; at present with the beds I have available it means statistically 2J students per bed,” she said.
Describing 1971 accommodation problems as the worst yet, Miss Borrie said that some relief could be expected with the opening of a 300-bed hall of residence at Ham before next year.
Miss Borrie said that she was particularly worried about accommodation for overseas students and those wishing to live near the Ham university site.
Any person who can help is asked to phone Miss Borrie at 65-819, extension 771.
