PRIZE IN BANK
Decision by writer (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) STOCKHOLM, Feb. 2. The Soviet writer, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, has asked the Nobel Foundation to transfer his SUSBO,OOO literature prize to a bank account. The academy secretary, Dr Karl Ragnar Gierow, said that he had just received “an indirect message” from Solzhenitsyn. The academy chairman, Mr Nils Staahle, elaborated, saying that the Soviet writer had asked for a transfer of the prize money kept in trust by file academy. Mr Gierow declined to say how the message from Solzhenitsyn had reached Stockholm or through what channels. Nor would he reveal its specific wording or which bank was involved. “This means there is no longer any hope of him personally coming here this spring to accept the tokens of the prize,” Mr Gierow said, indicating that the Nobel diploma and medal would be held by the academy until there were more instructions from Solzhenitsyn.
