Board doubles line charge

The charge for normal underground service lines in housing subdivisions was raised from $3O to $6O a consumer by the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board yesterday. “This is more in line with what adjoining supply authorities charge, although it is lower than one of them, which charges $64 in the counties it serves,” said the chairman (Mr L. F. Chamberlain). The general manager (Mr S E. Slatter) said that the board paid part of the cost, as did the local council through higher street-lighting charges, and the consumer contribution should be increased to keep pace with costs. The $3O charge was set in 1961.
