Film censorship
Sir, —Advertised in your paper as an “A” Certificate is a highly-rated film I went to see this week. I was outraged! “Ryan’s Daughter” was a visually beautiful film, tragically beautiful in story, and acted superbly—but completely marred by two unnecessary scenes. Depicted in detail was the most sacred of human relationships in the guise of “love,” later revealed to be only lust. Is there any censorship left in this country? This is nothing but exploitation of sex for profit. Now I understand why our younger generation is going askew, when they see such disgusting exhibitions thrown at them as entertainment Please, censors, recognise sin for what it really is—before any more harm is done!—Yours, etc., SHOCKED. January 26, 1971. [Mr D. C. Mclntosh, chief Censor and Registrar of Films, replies: “The film was ‘Recommended as suitable for Adults only 1 and this would adequately indicate to parents and others the type of film it was.”]
