Southland's richost race, the S4OOO Invercargill Centennial Gold Cup, wllf highlight the opening of the Southland Racing Club's summer meeting at Invercargill today. Top South Island stayers such as Princess Mellay (N.Z. Cup), Watallan (Metropolitan Handicap), Gay Gabador (Star Travel Cup), Beladin (Dunedin Gold Cup) and last year’s winner, Somelight, promise the most interesting clash of the season over this 13-furlong journey. The top-weight, Princess Mellay, will be tne favourite. The second leg, the Flying Handicap, has drawn a small but select field of open sprinters. Red Sash, a runaway sprint winner at Wyndham yesterday, and Hombre will clash with the strong form runners. My Boa and the Stewards' winner, Shewetta.
