Sheralee equals race record
(N.Z. Press Association) si 1 AUCKLAND. B Sheralee, such a disappointment at her previous start, In r the Avondale Stakes, camo * right back into her own with ' a record-equalling win in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at J Ellerslie yesterday. But for " hours previously she had ’ worried her trainer, I. J. J Tucker. I Tucker allowed Sheralee to run c along over three furlongs at < Takanini yesterday morning. To i his dismay the rider, B. F. An- < drews, said he believed Shera- ] lee was "feeling the hard t ground.” "I massaged her legs three £ times before we left home,” I Tucker said, "and again for good ; measure after she arrived at the ( course.” t If troubled during her race, I Sheralee showed no sign of it. f After Andrews had placed her ‘ beautifully on the inside behind i the pacemakers. Whistle Green and Beau Sovereign, she came ( strongly through the gap offered , by the false rail and led deci- i sively through the last half- , furlong. j Beau Sovereign rallied to gain ( the $l2OO for second by a nose I from Tupelo, which battled on well from a seemingly impossible < position when they had three 1 furlongs to go. Polperro, after ! losing much ground from the i
start, was fourth, close behind Tupelo and just In front of Master John. Sheralee won five of her six races before she failed in the Avondale Stakes, on December 8. This was her first race since. Tucker said yesterday that she would not be asked to run at Trentham later this month—her next race would most likely be the Eclipse Stakes at the Auckland midsummer meeting. Sheralee is another good product of Sir Woolf Fisher’s Ra Ora Stud, and a bay by Sovereign Edition from Tehrana. Sovereign Edition, a spectacular success fdr Ra Ora, is also the sire of Beau Sovereign. Tehrana is owned in partnership by Sir Woolf Fisher and Sir William Stevenson, who have an arrangement to race alternate foals by the mare. Tehrana was bought at a Trentham sale carrying a foal by Martian n, which proved to be Flash By, not the worst horse to have carried Sir William Stevenson’s colours. Sheralee brought her stake earnings to $12,500 and she also equalled the race record of lmin Usee, which Ystradowen set last year. The previous best was lmin 11 3-ssec shared by Crown Law (1969), Might (1965), Yahabeebe (1955) and Coleridge (1954). Andrews won earlier yesterday on Adelphi. Sheralee’s win gave his his forty-second for the season, and a 'clear leading position on the jockeys’ list.
