U.S. horse too speedy
"The Press" Special Service I AUCKLAND. Almost exactly seven months after being landed here, the American-bred six-year-old, Sharivari, collected probably the biggest prize won by a horse imported to New Zealand in the $lO,OOO Railway Handi- : cap at Ellerslie yesterday.
He also realised one of the , greatest ambitions of his trainer, ' C. M. Jillings, who won the Rail- , , way in 1946 as an apprentice on ; ’ Royal Scot. i Jillings, meanwhile has won a < [ couple ot Auckland Cups, a Wei- 1 . lington Cup, New Zealand Cup, < ) and all manner of other import- ' ant races as a trainer, but he 1 i had never one good enough to i take Ellerslie's biggest sprint
I Sharivari won at Hastings last September, in his second New Zealand race, then again at Te Aroha on December 5. He was a trifle disappointing in the Newmarket Handicap last Saturday, but fifth nevertheless, and a handsome winner this time after dashing past the pacemakers, Licketysplit and Tauporae, halfway down the run home. Sharivari is raced by an American publisher, Mr H. Harcourt, of Santa Barbara, California. Earlier, and vzith not nearly the same success, he sent Bahroona to New Zealand. Bahroona has shown himself very fast but lacking stamina. Sharivari has both qualities. Ajaseo, as on no fewer than five earlier occasions at Ellerslie, was second, just getting past Tauporae, which was well clear
of the pacemaker, Licketysplit. Jan’s Beau came next, then Simple Simon. G. F. Hughes, who took the ride on Sharivari with the scratching of Elabama, for which he had been earlier engaged, first won the Railway Handicap in 1951, on Archbishop, and he had been successful also on Denounce (1952), Yahabeeba (1957), and Elabama (1969).
