TROTTING Sassenach in runaway win at Addington

Driven by R. Young, who is enjoying a successful run at holiday meetings, Sassenach is I trained at Broadfields by J. H. Winter, who races him in partnership with Mr A. M. Sellars, of Invercargill. Sassenach’s! win qualified him to start in the New Year! Free-for-all this evening. The race was noteworthy; for the failure of two of the; favourites, Irish Whispers [ and Smokey Express. Irish I
. Whispers was forced three . wide from the start and with ■ | a hot pace set by Boy Friend i it was not surprising that he • dropped out over the last J two furlongs. Smokey, Ex- ( press was prominent to the straight, but could not , quicken, finishing ninth. Boy Friend began brilliantly and rushed to the ' front after two furlongs. He set a solid pace, being tracked by Smokey Express and Bra- ' vine, with Inky Boy and Bra-; , I Stylos, Sassenach, Irish Whispers, Jacquinot Bay and '; Waitaki Elect following. . I Sassenach was showing up!
wide just behind Boy Friend, Bravine, Smokey Express and Irish Whispers racing to the straight and he took control just inside the furlong. From then on he had his rivals well covered and he won easily by almost four lengths from Boy Friend, with a short length to the fast-finishing Waitaki Elect. Bravine was a close fourth, shading Alandria. Van Rover, Waratah and Inky Boy. Sam Again and False Square lost ground in the first furlong.
